Iron- and nickel-containing exohedral metallofullerenes, and earlier unknown heterobimetallic(Fe,Ni) metallofullerenes containing from 0.8 to 11.8 metal atoms per C60, have been obtained in a molten AlCl3/NaCl mixture by fullerene C60 interaction with iron and nickel halogenides, and zero-valent iron and nickel. Iron and nickel atoms form π-complexes with pentagonal faces of C60 polyhedrons; a crystal structure of heterobimetallic metallofullerenes has a hexagonal elementary cell. While metallofullerenes are isolated from a reaction mixture, partial hydrogenation and hydroxylation of a fullerene carbon cage take place, as well as intercalation of small molecules and ions (H2O, H+, Cl-) into interfullerene cavities.

Key words: fullerenes, metallofullerenes, organo-metallic compounds, π-complexes of iron and nickel, coordination compounds.
